Rachel's recycled rags to riches

After many requests, I have finally found the time to blog my recycled fashion piece from term 4 of Year 10 Home Ecconomics.
The unit asked us to create a garment from at least 70% recycled materials with a $25 budget. On our shopping trip I found a dark blue top, light blue doiley,a mens blue tie and a pair of 3/4 denim pants at St Vincent De Paul and bought some lace and two iron on patches from Ace Strapers. Then I upcycled them into this: (and just in case you were wondering - yes they are finished, completly)

For the shirt I sewed the doiley to the shirt with a button in the centre. I also stitched buttons to the side of the neck and cut strips of fabric at the bottom. For the pants, i bought some iron on patches and lace which i hand stitched on the back pockets. I also used the tie as a belt and cut the pants to transform them into denim shorts.

Just Because

Now you have read about the party and the Gift for Cecily this will show you the close ups of the great stitcheries.

Yes this may have caused tears. We have all been a bit worried about Cecily of late and decided as we couldn't fix the problem, we could make a quilt to make the problem seem a little better.

We all know Cecily LOVES her garden & her books, things that make her house a home, so we decided to focus on these beautiful things.  Most of our ladies stitched an embroidery - some for the 1st time ever and we pieced together this quilt.

Butterfly by Olivia, Bird & Roses by Elizabeth

A book in the shade of the tree by Gayle

Bees by Kym, Novel by Kristine

 Verse by Elizabeth
friends by Leanne
A "proper" beehive by Emily
 Garden by Tracey

 serenity by Colleen

LIttle bird (top) by Rachel
Big bird (bottom) by Kirsten

The UFO Craft tree by Debra (with a little incomplete stitching just for Cecily to do)
Thanks everyone for your signatures.
And the whole quilt top.  (Sorry about the angle of the photo).  When we handed it to Cecily on Tuesday it was borderless, she popped the red border on today and has some 'leftover' pieces to put around the outside..

Date Claimer

Good Morning Ladies

I am surfing the web this morning and came across this great suggestion on the Moda Bake Shop regarding joining batting.  I know a few of us use fusible interfacing to join batting but this shows a way to cut that should make the join less obvious.  Clever

And now onto super important info
Hope to see you all there to Stitch, Scrap, Socialise and fundraise.

National Sewing Month

In the USA September is
"National Sewing Month".

"In 1982, President Ronald Reagan declared September as National Sewing Month “in recognition of the importance of home sewing to our Nation.”  Wouldn't it be great if it was an international celebration, too." (quote from Modabake Shop website.)

So what are you working on this September?
My 2 sewing projects for this month is a secret birthday quilt for my mum's 60th, shhhhh!!
And my other one is the "Hashtag" quilt by Camille Roskelley that I am doing through the Craftsy online class.  This quilt requires 1 jelly roll, "Salt Air" by Cosmo Cricket and quiet a bit of background fabric, Bella Solid white.  So far I have only made one block, looking good :)  I will update you with more progress as the month of September goes on.

Happy National Sewing Month USA and all those other countries who enjoy the craft of sewing no matter what it is that you are making this month!

A very busy Tuesday night!!!

A
We've had a busy night here tonight even though some of our "regulars" were missing in action.

I finally finished my hungry caterpillar quilt for the lovely Lillie!!! Now just to get organised and post it.

Victoria started work on her brow bands (for horses)... Very fiddly but looking great!!

And Kym ironed and measured and looked and looked and debated and finally is ready to cut!!

See you all again next week!!

Patterns, patterns, patterns

A few weeks ago, Debra pulled out the Club Accucutter and tried out the Rob Peter to Pay Paul cutting die.  She cut quite a few blocks, but only managed to sew 4, but at least that is progress & a pretty pattern.
Now our super newby Kristine took her stunning Chevron quilt originally shown back here (on the 1st May) with her on a trip to The Quilter's Rest in Kingaroy and had a play on their long arm quilting frame.  Yes folks, she quited this one herself.
Look at the cool sunshine and cloud pattern in the quilting
I am seeing a real gift here in Kristine.

Well done, keep it up.

Cecily's Stunning Finish & a Birthday

Gayle posted here on the 23rd July about Cecily's stunning embroider.
Last Tuesday 13 August, Cecil brought her FINISHED PROJECT.
Isn't that just GORGEOUS.  It is a project keeper/caddy that Cecily informed me will hold her cottons & hand sewing project.

 Every surface has stitching
and as lovely as the inside is, check out the outside.  Every little diamond square has a pearl bead sewn into it.  It is so tactile.  Debra said it reminded her of a faberge egg, with a 'surprise' on the inside.

And as for a Birthday - Victoria came to craft to celebrate her Birthday.  As we did not know it was a special day, she even brought her own cake with her.

I am fairly sure I will get in trouble for posting these photos, but I think they show the real Victoria and her beautiful spirit and smile.

and the yummy, yummy, yummy caramel mud cake.
We hope your enjoyed your Birthday night with us Victoria.

From afar!!!

So it's about time I posted something isn't it!

I have actually been quite creative of late, I'm learning to crochet. The current project is for my lovely friend Tash's brand new baby girl!!!

I purchased a lovely white muslin wrap and have embroidered pictures from Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar in the corners and a cute caterpillar in the centre of one side.

I'm now crocheting an edge around it.

I'll try and take a photo of the whole thing when I'm done!!

Looking forward to hearing what you have all been up to!

Love Em xx
